Safe Drinking Water

To ensure safe drinking water throughout our schools, the district conducted extensive water testing this year.

Per the new Missouri “Get the Lead Out of School Drinking Water Act,” a new law to ensure safe drinking water in all school districts throughout the state, the district hired a professional environmental consulting firm to conduct lead testing for all drinking and food preparing (cooking/cleaning) water sources in our school buildings.

Our testing identified water sources in our district with lead concentration at or above the new five (5) parts per billion (ppb) (5 micrograms per liter) standard. The 5 ppb level now required by the state is below the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) recommended action level of 15ppb.

As part of our commitment to safety, we also chose to perform additional tests of water sources intended for hand washing, cleaning or other non-purposes.

This webpage provides information to keep our school community fully informed about the safety of our water systems.

Overview

The primary purpose of the new law is to ensure safety in drinking and food preparation.

Pleasant Hill R-III tested more all water sources used for drinking and/or food preparation and additional tests of water sources used for hand washing, cleaning or other non-drinking purposes.
Altogether, the district tested more than 273 water sources throughout the district.
100 percent of all Pleasant Hill R-III water fountains and food preparation stations met the new state standards
34 water sources across the district used for hand washing, cleaning, and other non-drinking purposes had actioin levels above the new state standards (5ppb)

Remedial Actions

The district has taken immediate steps to restrict access to all water sources identified through testing.

Appropriate signage has been placed on non-drinking water sources exceeding action levels until they can be successfully remediated.

We are evaluating each source for the best remediation option, such as removing or replacing equipment or inserting industry-standard filters certified for lead reduction. The district will retest all water sources identified through this process to ensure successful remediation.

At Pleasant Hill Primary School, 58 samples were tested. 58 samples met the new state standards.

At Pleasant Hill Elementary School, 24 samples were tested. 23 samples met the new state standards. The girls restroom sink in the dome did not meet the state standards. The results for this sink were 24.8 ppb

At Pleasant Hill Middle School, 30 samples were tested. 29 samples met the new state standards. The sink in the nurse’s office hall restroom did not meet the new standards. The results for this sink were 13.6 ppb

Pleasant Hill High School Results

At Pleasant Hill Central Office, 3 samples were tested. Two samples met the new state standards. The basement kitchenette sink did not meet the new state standards. The results for this sink were 6.4 ppb.
